Between the Politicians and the Priests

The Americans have a saying to describe a difficult situation: “Between a rock and a hard place.” In Santa Banana, the expression is: “Between the politicians and the priests.” When a Santa Bananan is confronted by a no-win situation, he throws up his hands and declares: “I’m caught between the politicians and the priests.”

Greg B. Macabenta

Greg B. Macabenta has an editorial on BusinessWorld Online today where he cites the Philippines difficult situation caused by the apathy and greed of the government as well as the stubborn, uncompromising, obsolete and downright senseless stand of the Catholic church.

I don’t really do government, that’s for some other guy to talk about. Suffice it to say, Mr. Macabenta points the finger to the government’s corruption and greed. We all know they’re all crooks, they all know they’re all crooks and there’s nothing to be done about it because those in a position to do so are also crooks.

Let’s go to the church end of things. The church, with their holier-than-thou attitude and primitive beliefs are blocking what few steps are being taken by outsiders to help alleviate the poverty situation in the country. Most recently, there have been threats of excommunication and denial of communion for those who support the campaign for the use of contraceptives. The horrors of it all!!! Former president Fidel V. Ramos points out that one of the root causes of our mangled economy is overpopulation. Too many people to feed and not enough food to go around. Too much labor to offer but no jobs. Too many people to educate and nobody around to teach them. The list goes on and on.

Take note too, that those who are able to teach were mostly poorly educated, themselves. Taking into account that their lack of training and education only allows them to impart less knowledge than they actually have and the students of today are less informed. Those same students will be the teachers of the future.

The thing is, these ridiculous superstitions and beliefs actually scare off the simple-minded individuals around here and the church gets it way. The blind lemmings we call the masses will rally behind whatever whichever religious leader they inexplicably follow and drag down any who oppose them. The people and government fear the church and will do whatever it tells them to. It’s like being back in the time of the Spanish occupation of the Philippines where the clergy had full control of the actions of the people. For some reason, the idiots never figured out that it was all just a hoax. What power the church created for itself back then is still present now.

This creates the rut that the country finds itself in now. There’s a government which won’t help the people and a church which is stopping people from helping themselves. The country is in a downward spiral and there is no foreseeable end to it.
