Why Are You an Atheist?

This question was brought up today… again. Honestly, I don’t see the point to it. After all, aren’t we all born as atheists? When people come out of their monthers’ wombs, they don’t come pre-programmed with any knowledge, whatsoever. Up until the time when a child begins to grasp information, he remains an atheist. Gradually, though, through social contact, he is slowly indoctrinated with the beliefs of those surrounding him. Depending on how powerful the brainwashing is and how malleable (read gullible) the child, you get varied levels of fanaticism.

Asking someone why he’s an atheist is like asking someone to prove god does not exist. No one can prove an unrestricted negative. It’s like asking someone, why he’s in his natural state. Should he be otherwise?

Perhaps the better question would be, “Why aren’t you an atheist?” Then there will be a multitude of answers, all akin to some form of brainwashing. Therefore, the actual answer to the question, “Why are you an atheist?” would be:

“The brainwashing I received had no lasting effects, if any at all.”

There, that’s why I’m an atheist. Why aren’t you an atheist?
